If you are hoping to get pregnant, you can track your CM after ovulation to determine if you are pregnant or not.
What is Cervical Mucus?
Cervical mucus is a fluid or discharge that is secreted by the glands in the cervix. Hormonal changes that a woman goes through in her menstrual cycle changes the consistency and the texture of her CM.
The main function of the cervical fluid is to:
- Prevent bacteria and germs from entering the uterus(womb) from the cervix
- Create a sperm friendly environment to transport the sperm through the cervix to the uterus and fallopian tube
The most fertile cervical mucus is the one produced just before ovulation occurs. This CM is known as the egg white cervical mucus.
It is stretchy, wet and slippery just like an egg white. The consistency enables the sperm to swim upwards into the uterus and fallopian tube to penetrate the egg.
An increase in the estrogen hormone levels just before ovulation causes the EWCM to be produced.
After ovulation, the progesterone hormone takes over.
The progesterone hormone causes the cervical mucus to be sticky and thick. This indicates you are no longer fertile after ovulation.
But what happens to your discharge if conception occurred after ovulation
What is implantation discharge?
Implantation discharge is also known as implantation bleeding or spotting. And it occurs when the fertilised egg attaches its self to the uterine lining around 6-7 days after implantation.
The process of implantation requires the embryo to burrow(dig) through the thick lining of the uterus. During this process a little blood is shed.
This blood is light pink in color or brownish red and it is very scanty. Implantation bleeding usually last for about 1-2 days.
You may still be pregnant even though you don't have any discharge during implantation. Only 1 in 3 women experience spotting during implantation.
Take a look at the following signs of implantation to know if you are pregnant or not.
Signs of implantation
A mild lower abdominal cramps is sometimes felt when the fertilised egg is digging through the uterus lining.
Because this cramping is so mild, not all women notice the pain. It is lighter and not as painful as period cramps.
A light pink or brown spots of blood may be noticed on a toilet paper or on a panties after implantation has taken place. This can happen 3-7 days before your period is due.
Not all women have spotting during implantation. So don't worry if you do not have.
And if you do have spotting during implantation, it is nothing to worry about.
Implantation spotting is not as heavy as your normal period so it shouldn't soak a pad or a tampon. It also last for a few hours to 2 days.
Due to hormonal and various changes going on inside your body after conception, you may experience headaches. This is similar to the one experienced during PMS(Premenstrual Syndrome).
The rising level of the estrogen and progesterone hormone in the body causes the breast to become sore and tender.
Your milk ducts and glands are already preparing for breastfeeding 9 months down the line.
Your nipples may feel sensitive and you may feel a tingly sensation in them.
A darker areola also occurs in the first weeks of pregnancy.
Milky White Discharge
A milky discharge before period is also a sign of pregnancy. Although this could also be classified as a premenstrual syndrome.
Leucorrhea is produced during pregnancy due to the increase in the estrogen hormone.
You are safe as long as the discharge is not itchy, smelly or causes any form of discomfort.
The ultimate sign of pregnancy is a missed period and a positive pregnancy test.
The best time to test for pregnancy is some days or preferably a week after your period is late.
This is because there would be enough HCG(human chorionic gonadotropin) released into the blood stream in a quantity that is detectable by most pregnancy test.
HCG is the hormone that the placenta produces after a successful implantation.
Another pregnancy symptom is peeing more frequently than you would normally do. This is caused by the pressure the growing uterus puts on the bladder.
Also your kidneys produces more urine after conception due to extra blood flow going on in your body.
Food carvings and Aversion
The desire for some certain foods is caused by hormonal changes going on in the body.
Also food aversion is caused by this extreme hormonal changes.
Don't be surprised if you find yourself vomiting at the smell or sight of some foods you once liked.
What does watery discharge after ovulation mean?
